This is a clissic of classics here in Spain.The only politic critic film made during the dictadure, dressed as a “light comedy”.
I'm impressed that some american company has released an edition with this amazing classical Sapanish movie.And you can be sure that in our cinema there's not much classic from this period…

Glad to see you liked Mister Marshall. It's of course a beloved classic in Spain. Plácido is more complex, many characters speaking simultaneously in long uncut shots… you need subtitles. You can contact Bill Kamberger, I'm not sure how he managed to see it.

BTW, I have the same problem with The Devil in the Flesh, I have a VHS copy but original version without subtitles. Sigh.

Thanks for the quick response; after acquiring the other version, I was nervous to trust what it said online without verification!

A friend gave me a DVD of an excellent Israeli film earlier this year and the subtitles (the dialogue is in Hebrew, and there's a lot of it) just stop for about 15 minutes in the middle while the main characters engage in a terrific argument. I've no idea what the problem was but they were MAD!

Yup, the one that you can buy on Amazon (which is what I bought) has English subs. I think I link to the Amazon page at the top of my entry.

Still looking for an english subs file to go with my video copy of PLACIDO… or a Spanish speaking buddy who'll watch it with me!

Thanks for this very useful analysis and guide; I've been fascinated by this film but unfortunately don't speak much Spanish which has hampered my viewing. I obtained a Spanish DVD version, which indicated it would have English subtitles, a claim that turned out to be untrue, and when the film played at the Harvard Film Archive last year it also did not have English subtitles.Did the Tribanda Pictures release of the film have English subtitles?
