What a great film! – Ann Sothern and Kirk Douglas were great as the Phipps, full of life and vitality and I loved the caustic remarks of Linda Darnell as Lora Mae. I thought the Bishops were a bit underdeveloped, or maybe just a bit dull? There were a few scenes at the start that seemed a bit stilted, again with the Bishops, but the flashbacks were great, the Phipps dinner with the radio boss was funny, and Porter's courtship of Lora Mae was funny yet sad at the same time. I'll need to watch 'All About Eve' now as I enjoyed that so much.

Linda Darnell is certainly the highlight of the film for me. If you get your hands on the DVD there's a wonderful documentary about her that originally aired on the Biography channel.

I found this article through The House Next Door. I love this film – I first saw it late one night on PBS (maybe 12 years ago?) and was awestruck. I ended up buying it on VHS and still watch it on occasion. This movie was the first time I had seen Linda Darnell and when I told my mother about it, she told me that she had been named after Linda Darnell. Your compilation of all of this information was fantastic. Thank you!

You might want to fix the typo in the first sentence. While martial life might be a fine subject for a film, marital life is what this film is about.
