Matt, I like your comment very much. Even if I agree with you that Lynch's movies, and especially this one, are specifically trying to avoid specific narrative cohesion, in a broader sense they are telling fables, and the major one that Lynch has continued to push harder and harder from TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME onward is the idea of trauma splintering women's psyches, forcing escape and self-denial and fantasy, which results in these expressionistic narratives.

that is a pretty awesome hypothesis, Matt, certainly makes me admire the film more. Maybe a couple more scenes with the Polish prostitutes would have brought this mirrored narrative out more; the whole Polish side of the film felt underdeveloped to me.

Gosh, we sound kinda smart. Maybe we should, like, write a book or something. (Thanks, Kev, for having me/us over; it was fun, as ever.)

Very cool write-up, guys. Certainly one of my

My reading on the Polish strand - which reading, admittedly, is attempting to apply a level of narrative cohesion that Lynch clearly doesn't give a shit about - is that it's the most "real" of the film's narrative strands. It seems to me that, in terms of "solving" the narrative (why would you want to do that?), the Polish prostitute that we see sitting on the hotel bed watching the rabbits/Dern story on TV is the central "real" character. She's trying to escape by imagining herself as an actress, her life as a movie - herself as Dern, who is herself imagining herself as a character. Of course, the threads start to dissolve, blend, break down, freak out.

Or something. And ultimately, who cares? It's beautiful, scary, radical, funny, brilliant, and I think on some level it always makes sense, even when it doesn't.
