If you’ve ever enjoyed watching a time-lapse video of something being built then you will understand what I mean when I say that taking pictures of your small bathroom remodelling project in their development can be great fun.
Pictures save the day. You are able to reminisce the past and will keep your thoughts going. These oldies but goodies stuff can now be considered as "antiques". Better keep it safe.

Very appealing vintage movie. Too bad I can't find a copy that's English dubbed or at least have a subtitle in that language. Your review only made me appreciate the film more and arouse my interest to watch it with my movie-addict buddies.

Hi Ekkehard, it was such a pleasure to see you this past weekend. I'm glad that, among other things, we got to discuss this film and elaborate on your comments to the significance of this film in its historical and cultural specificity, as well as the aesthetics built upon those specifics. As I said, it made me think about films whose beauties - whether the subtexts of locations and exchanges, or nuances in dialogues and dialects - can largely be understood by an audience of a specific locality and is harder to translate to a universal audience. This is something that concerns me in my advocacy of world cinema and esp. so-called Third cinema whose films are based on an indigenous logic of film grammar or cultural context. It seems that Hollywood gets an unfair advantage when it comes to promoting its depictions of subcultures. I think ROCKER is as good as, if not better than EASY RIDER, though EASY RIDER is ranked in the 300s and ROCKER in the 800s on the TSPDT list.

Anyway, I hope to hear more from you on ROCKER and PAUL in our proposed commentary - looking forward to it.

The film is not so much appreciated here for its "campy" aspects; rather for Lemke's ability to snap a time, a milieu, a certain kind of (body) language into something like a time capsule. The narrative is almost completely irrelevant - or, relevant only insofar as it is the medium in which Lemke catches the impulses, gestures, desires of these people in their time in rather raw form. Lemke's is a very peculiar kind of slice-of-life cinema that works as an observation of lay actors performing themselves. What is underlying it all is a concept of authenticity that is actually rather complex, because it needs to be crude and artificial in just the right measures in order to work. "Paul", from 1974, in my opinion is Lemke's masterpiece, due to a truly and amazingly crazy (non)-performance by its protagonist Paul Lyss.

Well, anyway, looking forward to seeing you tonight at the Arsenal.
