Not sure how my hopscotch method of internet research landed me here, but I'm glad it did. Great piece covering both Peckinpah & McQueen. Both of these men have been imitated, even blatantly copied by countless modern directors and actors, but the originals always shine through. Peckinpah's violence was never joyful and always cost a piece of soul for those who, even casually, resorted to it's use. McQueen's Man always accepted the cost of his actions and while he may have necessarily made amends, (to friends, lovers) he never expected the deeds to be forgotten.

I think The Getaway, for all it's pulpesque profit motives as well as Junior Bonner (and it's lack of profit) can only hint at what these two could have done if film fortune had brought them together a few more times

damn, i didn't realize until i read your blog that McQueen's birthday was last week. I should have tried to post by then. Very nice tribute you did, by the way. It's cool that Sean Axmaker left a comment - I've been wanting to do a video essay with him for a while...

Damn. That was a lot to take in. Great stuff. But I didn't enjoy any of it more than this:

"This time Peckinpah’s Man, that molotov cocktail of helplessness and violence grubbing for salvation, is imbued with a cold professionalism unparalleled in his filmography thanks to McQueen’s tightly coiled appearance of masculine assurance: unflinching eyes incessantly assessing everything around him; a body that betrays nary a twitch of unnecessary movement."

Very well said.

"The Hong Kong Connection" is a legal thriller about a gutsy female attorney who takes on high ranking International officials. It's a taut, rollercoaster of a ride from New York to Palm Beach to Washington D.C. to Hong Kong. The plot is expertly woven, the characters persuasive, and the dialogue snappy and spot on.
www.StrategicBookPublishing.com/TheHongKongConn...
