Shooting Down Pictures

Before I even watched the video I answered the question out loud. “Dark”, I said to my monitor.
It was great to see that you explored that. From “High Plains Drifter' on (It's hard to remember “Play Misty For Me”, I saw it so long ago) I have noticed that far more often than not the negative spaces in his films are not just dark but are black voids. It's sometimes frustrating because my eye keeps searching for something beyond the immediate subjects.
An art director at an ad agency once told me that “photographers either shoot dark or they shoot light”. Maybe those that shoot light place subjects/characters in a world and those that shoot dark construct the world one piece at a time. At least that's the way is sometimes seems to me with directors and photographers alike. I have noticed that the more three dimensional the story, characters and acting are the less I am aware of the effective lack of a dimension in the shot. Wait… the screen is only two dimensions, right? I love that we forget that.
