Though the movie is heavy on plot and crowd scenes, it still didn't lose its focus on the immediate circle of the main aspect. The director has laid this one very brilliantly, and I'll definitely share this with my friends to give them more insights about the Japanese history.

While there are moments in this that I appreciate (usually ones that involve the rarely used female characters)< i find this a remarkably clunky film overall.

Dennis Sutton's gibe about the quality of the cinematography strikes me as remarkably ignorant. I doubt that the hard-working and conscientious Miyagawa was _able_ to do a lazy job. And how does Sutton know what the colors in this film originally looked like (or were intended to look like -- if the film stock simply did not work out as well as planned). The comparison to Kurosawa is also rather silly. -- since Kurosawa didn't tackle filming in color for another 15 years or so (when Japan had far more reliable color film stock). And Kinugasa's rather gaudy use of color in Gate of Hell never won much praise in Japan (even if it did impress rather naive Western film critics).

Good deal. Congrats on getting your video essays restored to YouTube, by the way! "Learn about Copyright & Fair Use" is at the top of my list of things to do as soon as I finish my degree (mired in the history of the book at the moment); hopefully I'll be able to be of some use the next time this sort of thing goes down.

good question Andy. Seems that a number of these articles (possibly all of them) come from other sources, most notably the International Dictionary of Films and Filmmakers. I've noticed that a lot of entries on Film Reference are identical to passages quoted on the director pages on They Shoot Pictures Don't They with the IDFF cited as the source.

At the bottom of the Film Reference main page the site copyright is attributed to Advameg Inc. If you go to their site http://www.advameg.com/ you'll see that they operate a number of reference-themed sites, from medical to business to fashion.
