Yeah disturbing for all these odd things, but most of all it is sexually explicit. You know the pelvic thrust, the slap on the ass, the leg moves.
I thought that it objectifies legs actually. High up uncovered and the rest is hidden by the black uniform, that conceals other curves. Tits and ass disappear. So all we see is hot legs in action, inviting, tantalizing…
I find her moves more erotic (verging on pornographic) here than in Crazy in Love.

Before knowing about the Bob Fosse reference I thought it was inspired by Sport Aerobics or something. She looks exhausted at the end!

That’s great that you like this video. Beyonce’s pelvic thrust in this video is nothing compared to what she does in her performances for “Crazy in Love” back in 2003, the notorious “uh-oh” dance.

Why do you think the video is disturbing? Because of Beyonce’s Luke Skywalker hand? That’s one part of the video I haven’t talked about, how the “Sasha Fierce” cyborg alter-ego she’s adopted for this album makes her both more and less than human, more and less than sex object. Like that thing she does with her hand at the end, it’s so sexy and independent.

Thanks for this post Kevin, I’m mesmerized by this music video. I wanted to blog on it too. How did you find this Bob Fosse reference? That explains a lot of the “goofy steps”, which were more appropriate to the “Benny Hill” type of music. When was it the 70ies? Does TV put on anymore dance performance without lyrics as a segment in a variety show? I guess the Dance with the stars, So you think you can dance…. changed that a bit.

Personally I think Beyonce definitely improved the original, she totally sexed it up. I’m surprised the pelvic thrust comes from the 60ies though. It’s a shocker even today.

I agree with you about the camerawork and the lighting design. The 360° pano kills the 4th wall!

The video is both fascinating and disturbing.
