John Lithgow did justice to the role of Irving's protagonist. The movie may seem naive from the character's birth to adultlife, but it's much more than that once you take a closer look.

“Of the films I’ve seen in the past two years for this project, this is the film for whose placement on the 1000 Greatest Films I have the most reservations.”

Yeah, really. When I saw the link on “The House Next Door” I thought “Are you kidding me?” There are films that are on this list that I don’t like but at least I recognize their significance to cinema history. But “Garp?”

Given that three of the citations are foreign, I wonder if perhaps critics overseas rate the film higher than US critics. Perhaps it flatters their notions of what life in the US is like: grotesque mixed with mundane, punctuated by unexpected violence.
