Hey Kevin-

Well, attempting to overlook how obviously 1970's it looks, the casting of Julie Christie and Alan Bates seems to me a horrible choice--much too old. What I loved about the novel was its depiction of a child and adolescent-based world, and that the great tragedy that traverses mainly occurs because Marian and Ted are hardly older than children themselves. I can't imagine how having two actors who are obviously adults in the roles could NOT completely alter the delicate relationship dynamics I found so powerful and entrancing in Hartley's novel.

Hartley's The Go-Between is one of my most treasured novels... and while I'm usually up for adaptations, the photos for this one have always looked like all kinds of wrong.

I'll give it a try someday, I suppose.
