Well, attempting to overlook how obviously 1970’s it looks, the casting of Julie Christie and Alan Bates seems to me a horrible choice–much too old. What I loved about the novel was its depiction of a child and adolescent-based world, and that the great tragedy that traverses mainly occurs because Marian and Ted are hardly older than children themselves. I can’t imagine how having two actors who are obviously adults in the roles could NOT completely alter the delicate relationship dynamics I found so powerful and entrancing in Hartley’s novel.
