Secret Sunshine has no distributor yet (though its status as the Indiewire poll top undistributed film will likely change that. Even so I don’t see it doing well commercially in the US).

Silent Light will be distributed by Tartan (same guys who handled Battle in Heaven), hopefully sometime in ‘08.

Alas, I see nothing that hints the existence of any US distribution arrangements for either Secret Sunshine or Silent Light.

Is it being distributed? I don’t think Secret Sunshine has a distributor yet, does it? That’s one I really want to see.

From Reygadas’ first two films, I’d have to guess that kerpan’s taste would be on the other side of the planet from this guy.

I was just a little bit disappointed in Kawase’s Mourning forest. good — but not as good as Suzaku or Shara, I thought.

Not sure if I like the Ichikawa or the Yamashita film more. Interestingly, I think Naruse may have been the very first director ever (anywhere) to make a film of this sort.

I’ll have to keep an eye out for Silent Light.

I still need to see Suo’s new film (about the wrongly accused subway groper — a big jump from Shall We Dance).

Looking at the extras on the Gentle Breeze disc, I was surprised to see that Yamashita was noticeably shorter than the teen-aged actresses. Jun Ichikawa, on the other hand, looks like a (very friendly) white-haired bear.

I’ll try to drop Hannah a line and ask her about Hotel Chevalier (which I haven’t seen yet, though I believe it’s online somewhere)

Michael, I was going to ask you what you thought of Mourning Forest – now I guess I know.

I will have to check out the Ichikawa movie on your recommendation. If/when you have an opportunity, check out Reygadas’ “Silent Light” – something tells me that movie will intrigue you. If anything it makes a useful counterpoint to “Secret Sunshine”.

Just saw “A Gentle Breeze in the Village” — and it is a charmer. I think it goes onto my top films list. Between this and Jun Ichikawa’s “How I Became Myself”, this was an excellent year for gentle, intelligent films about Japanese school kids. ;~}
