Perhaps it chimes with my own worldview, or maybe because the style just appeals to my sensibilities - either way i still think it's Malle's most intense, refined piece of work. Any lack of explanation, it seems to me, is only down to the protagonist not feeling that he needs to explain himself [because no one would understand if he did]. There's a rawness here missing from "The Lovers" and the whimsical spirit of "Elevator To The Gallows" has been replaced here by something far harsher, cynical and above all, natural. Of the Malle films i’ve seen (11 at last count, i think) this is by far my favourite. Perhaps it chimes with my own worldview, or maybe because the style just appeals to my sensibilities – either way i still think it’s Malle’s most intense, refined piece of work.
