“Esatern Promises”
I was bowled over by Viggo Mortensen’s performance. I saw the film about a week ago and his eyes, his look, his smirk has been with me every day since. He is rapidly becoming my favorite actor because he makes something new, long lasting, thought provoking and totally true, out of the characters he plays, the way he plays them and I feel also, why he plays them. Here he is a Russian mobster’s driver, or is he? The important thing is that you won’t be able to take your eyes of him. Here he has David Cronemberg at his side / or sides, once again. Cronemberg seems to know and understand Mortensen’s power. And Mortensen seems to trust him completely. Eastern Promises is a really good film with and extraordinary Viggo Mortensen at its very core. Not to be missed.

If there’s a Dr. Morbius on the IMDB, I don’t know about it. Maybe there is, but if there is, it’s not me.

I should note that I neglect my blog shamefully. I’ve generally used it as a repository for my “what movies did you see last week…” posts, but I’ve been irregular at that, too. I’m making an effort this year.

The drop in my moviegoing has three sources, I think. The first is my move out of the city. I live twenty miles away from the nearest movie theater now, so I have to weigh my desire to see something with the time and gas involved.

Second, when I HAVE made it to the theater, I’ve occasionally stood in front of the box office looking at what was showing and saying to myself (sometimes aloud): “I don’t want to pay to see ANY of this stuff” The availability of good movies in the theaters in my area has been noticably off this year and my local art house has had a pretty crappy schedule this year, and usually ridiculously after the fact. They did show Killer of Sheep, though, so I won’t bitch too much.

The final piece of the puzzle is something I don’t wish to discuss just yet.

In any event, I’m trying to expand my viewing this year. My blog at krelllabs.blogspot.com should be documenting my progress.

Hope the curtail in movie watching has been supplemented with activities that are just as fulfilling if not moreso! Do drop a line sometime to let me know how things are in general.

I’d be surprised if I saw 100 movies this year (down from the heyday of 400 or so a few years back). But life isn’t dull to say the least.

I posted a list of favorites (and not so favorites) on the IMDB Classics. God only knows where it’s lemminged off to by now. It was Binx’s thread, and it may still be active. I have only the barest idea of what I saw last year, beyond the fact that my moviegoing has been seriously curtailed in the last year. I’ve been slacking on writing about film, too.

In any event, if I were to recreate the list, I’m sure it would be different.

Chris, I’m dreading to hear what you have to say about There Will Be Blood, given your past regard for PTA. Have you posted a favorites list anywhere yet?

I listed Cronenberg’s Eastern Promises as a “bitter disappointment” when I mulled over the movies I’d seen this year, and I think the source is primarily the screenplay. So I’m sympathetic with your assessment. I wish Cronenberg would go back to writing his own movies. The ones he writes himself always seem more interesting than the ones he doesn’t. Still not enough to knock him out of the “see at first opportunity” class.

I didn’t like The Assassination of Jesse James at all. Too much like Mallick-lite, and I don’t much like Mallick to start with. Feh.
