All I know is that I felt something missing at the end, that this final confrontation didn’t have enough heft to it. Dano’s character remains largely a cipher, his whole religious thing fels like an act, more Andy Kaufman than Jimmy Swaggart. When he denounces his faith it should have felt like a genuine self-betrayal. I think an early 80s Tom Cruise would have worked better for me, just someone with more intensity and conviction, in a way that’s both charismatic and scary.

I also saw the film at a screening earlier this month and have to say I loved the film.

But I have to disagree with your comment about Paul Dano. I thought he was perfect – creepy, baby-faced and ghoulish. For me di Caprio just wouldn’t have fitted the bill. But, different opinions are the lifeblood of good discussion, right?
