I think many Catholics would be unable to accept such a presentation of Mary in this way. My thoughts when I saw the film broadcast some years ago were in the main how any man could restrain himself from wanting to make love to so beautiful a woman – without becoming seriously psychologically damaged – unless he had zero sex drive – which may be possible – for as the disparaged Kinsey report showed – sexual outlet or expression is the one area of human activity where individual differences are abnormally different – some persons would like relations several times a day and others once a year. Such variability in other dimensions of human experience is not evident – but what does Godard achieve except to perhaps to show the tensions of pregnancy – there seems to be no loving anticipation of the birth of a child – this is only a burden not a joy – to capture the presence of God in this he has definitely not achieved. However it is represented, Mary is essentially the revelation of the Motherhood of God – through Mary God is able to express all the qualities of the feminine which humans hold dear. Thus in portraying Mary even as a modern person one must portray the sublime – there seemed to be no transcendent quality to this film – it is ultimately not leading to the joy of the incarnation – Deus Nobiscum – God becoming one with us – sharing our existence to raise our expectations of humanitarian goodness – but to
show only the drugery of human existence. To be human is also to be divine – that is what the incarnation implies and this was absent.

“clinical and tender” sounds right for post-”every man for himself” Godard — if there’s a pathos to be found in the cerebral then you can find it for certain in Notre Musique, In Praise of Love, Passion, Nouvelle Vague, Forever Mozart, and most definitely Histoires du Cinema (probably my favorite of the bunch)

so Matt do you prefer his earlier works like Charles?

David your recent post is worthy of Godard, or Errol Morris’ Times pieces (which you reference).

Matt, this was also one of the first Godard films I ever saw. In college, as I discovered film, I kep hearing about this Godard character, but hadn’t seen any of his films (somehow I skipped intor film classes in my program). So at the local video store I rented this and Prenom: Carmen on VHS tapes. I think my reactions to these films were somewhat like yours.

I certainly enjoyed reading all the reviews and blurbs linked to above; I feel like this is the one period of Godard’s work I’m least familiar with, in that I’m still trying to make sense of those first 2 films. These links are a great addition to that process.
