The movie reminds me of the era when muscle-and-bone reproduction of the thinking into which capitalism dreams of incorporating all human beings are is in its strongest arousal. But aside that, hilarity and entertainment is wonderfully presented by the movie as well.

Dames is one of my favourite BBrkly films as it has that luscious extended sequence of one of my favourite songs – I only have eyes for you. I first heard that at the New Theatre Cardiff at the age of 8 when I was taken to the panto Alladin and this lovely young lady playing Aladdin sang the song as part of the show. That was some 60+ years ago.

I got to know about BB films via Channel 4 which used to show a lot of musicals. Some of his early films like Palmy Days have some very interesting sequences.

Now that DVDs are available I was able to get one of the BB collections and so can enjoy the more well known and bigger budget films – but the song Bend down Sister from Palmy Days and its dancing sequence with broomsticks is very entertaining, as is Eddie Cantor.

Fred Astaire is my favourite song and dance man – and I love his films, but I also like Dick Powell almost as much – he was always playing such happy characters and his songs were very suitable for me as I was a tenor – with old age I am more like a fiver!

Well done Hollywood to produce such gems – these happy cheerful films full of delightful melodies and delectable dances – raise one’s spirits splendidly.

Let us hope that one rap will be pap and BB will be as well known to the present generation as he is to aficionadas such as ourselves.
