I agree, the second series was the best. In almost all series after the second movie, the rest gets worse and worse...
Turkey Travel Guide and Photos
Austria Travel Guide and Photos

CodeKnown - I saw Army of Darkness much earlier than the other two, and outside of its trilogy context it was very entertaining in its own right -- certainly the most chock-full of memorable one-liners, a sure sign of its unabashed pandering for cult status. Now that I have a full view of the trilogy, I think I like #2 the most for the same reason you do.

Originally the scene in Evil Dead II that mildly reprises the tree rape in #1 had the poor lady literally ripped in half by the branches. I think they actually shot that sequence - but they eliminated the scene from the cut when they figured it would surely result in an X rating. (even without the scene the film had to be released unrated)

Phillip - thanks for sharing that formative experience -- I love hearing stories like that, how movies crept into our consciousness at our most impressionable age. Whatever movie it is, I can always relate to it as if it happened to me.

I rented this film as a young teenager with my cousins because the cover made it look like a film our parents wouldn't want us to watch. I always thought it was funny that the cover of the film seemed so proud that Roger Ebert only gave it "3 stars". That night we watched this film, and I was blown away. After this, all of my cousins fell asleep and I watched "Bladerunner" for the first time in my life - 2 inches from the screen - until 4am in the morning. Between the two of these films, it was a truly life changing evening.

I like the 2nd the most of the three films. To me there seems a creeping of comedy into the series, hinted at in the first film and gone way too far in the third; with II i think he strikes the balance perfectly.

I didn't pick up on the misogyny of the first as you did, but i assume this element - if it's present at all in the sequel - is much more underplayed.

I'm tempted to buy the first 2 on dvd, for the film as much for the commentaries but Army Of Darkness i just couldn't like. I'll give it a go again some time though... probably.
