It’s a great idea and a pleasant result to make it a two-ways dialogue, of a man and a woman commenting their perception of a scene dealing with the confrontation of a man and a woman in their respective attitudes. I hope you will develop this duet format too.
I haven’t seen The Heiress, but your gesture analysis of this scene reminds me of the flirtatious piano scene towards the end of McCarey’s Ruggles of Red Gap, between Ruggles and Mrs Judson, which is also, if memory serves, a great mise-en-scene of body language.

Ordinarily I really enjoy your video essays but this time I think you miss the boat by focusing on Clift when it is de Havilland that gives one of the great performances in screen history.

Also it is very apparent in both the novel and film that Morris IS a fortune hunter.

Well hawksian, you have to understand that Clift is the all-time favorite actor of one of us.

Our point on Morris was that Clift’s performance adds a layer of uncertainty to the character – that he might be a sheep in wolf’s clothing.

Fair enough. Like I said I enjoy your website and you are certainly entitled to discuss whatever you want about a particular film. Just my two cents.

Montgomery Clift is one of my favorite actors of the 1950′s along with Marlon Brando and James Dean. The Heiress shows Clift in his prime as a talented actor and matinee idol. The Heiress is one of my favorite films in the Clift filmography along with The Search, Red River, The Big Lift, A place in the Sun and From Here to Eternity, Pretty much everything before his tragic car crash from which I agree he was never the same as a an actor and hollywood star.
