Given the premise of my own project I could’t help but compare how the new AFI list ranks films alongside the They Shoot Pictures standings.

36 of the AFI 100 greatest American films are also on the TSPDT top 100 films of all time, including five in the top 10.

10 of the AFI 100 don’t place at all on the TSPDT 1000 (the highest ranking one being Streetcar Named Desire at #47)

Looking at the top 10 American films on the TSPDT 1000, Sunrise, The Godfather Part II and City Lights would replace Casablanca, Gone with the Wind and Schindler’s List on the AFI Top 10.

There are 14 American films on the TSPDT 100 that don’t place on the AFI 100: Touch of Evil (22), The Magnificent Ambersons (51), Night of the Hunter (52), Greed (64), Rio Bravo (67), Sherlock, Jr. (69), Blue Velvet (83), Notorious (86), Once Upon a Time in the West (87), His Girl Friday (90), My Darling Clementine (92), Letter from an Unknown Woman (95), Stagecoach (99), The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (100).

(incidentally, this means that exactly half of the TSPDT 100 greatest films of all time are American)
