I haven’t read Tolstoy’s novel so I bring nothing to the table in terms of comparing source material to screen. I understand that this is the thrift savings plan most extensive effort to date to cinematically enact as much of Tolstoy’s novel as possible. But of course, no matter how faithful Bondarchuk may try to adapt the novel, the result must be judged first and foremost as a work of cinema. So it’s fine with me that I can’t refer to the novel to make my assessments. Let the film stand on its own terms.

Very solid review up to the last two paragraphs. Paragraph 6 in particular is very good, in defining what distinguishes the film from other long historical epics. Thanks very much for sharing.

Hi Dmitri – I appreciate your suggestion. If you look at the archives of my blog, you’ll notice that I’ve spent several years evaluating films in the concise manner you recommend. It just so happens with the Shooting Down Pictures project, and with this particular magnum opus, I’ve decided to take a more exploratory approach. To borrow from your analogy, I suppose I’ve decided to take my time exploring every facet of the beautiful woman before me, instead of just blowing my wad in an instant. I guess it’s different strokes for different folks – and films.

I’m sorry that you found this entry unsatisfactory. For the record I am not calling these comments a “review” and I indicated as much in my opening paragraph. I also like to experiment with my approaches towards evaluating films. Watching an 8 hour, four part epic might merit an unorthodox manner of review.
