I loved this sentence: "Both abstruse and explicit, sacred and profane, theoretical and emotional, it’s alternately captivating, frustrating and ultimately in a league of its own." I'm intrigued by your S/H comparison as well, but it's the Gibson one that jumps out at me. Both films are so brutally physical that they imply the spiritual as an unmentioned, unrepresentable counterpoint.

It strikes me that most of the people were there for the movie not for the concert, and even if they were, the very thought of those images flashing above them was perhaps too distracting for them to focus on the music. Ah well. Thanks for alerting me to that Rouge article - I need to check that site more often (I'm still waiting to hear from Adrian Martin about Peter Ibbetson).

An interesting take Kevin, and thanks for the comment on my site. Since I generally try to read as little about a film before I see it I neglected to re-familiarize myself with the stations of the cross and the story of the Passion---which it seems, from your account, is very, very strongly tied to images I had thought were somewhat arbitrary in the film. I hope I can get a second viewing as you did.

In his interview over at Rogue, Usai seemed to make it clear he never wanted to show the film on DVD! I guess it is hard to show your friends your creation when it can only be experienced under so strict rules. I was about 15-20 rows back at St. John and seemed to get most of the music "purely" (or whatever) and not from the speakers. I was wondering why so many people were walking out of the film when they could just close their eyes and listen to the music, but your comment about the sound system hints that my aural pleasure wasn't necessarily shared by all the people in attendance.
