Wow, fantastic analysis!
It’s the first time I see such a homemade commentary track (did you do others before?). It’s a great way to communicate film analysis online. I wish more critics/cinephiles would develop this multimedia device (which seems quite appropriate to cinema).

And thanks for the comments on the video essay. There are two others I’ve done attached to the previous 2 films on my project, While the City Sleeps and Peter Ibbetson. I agree completely with your remarks on the appropriateness of multimedia to discuss video, which is why I do them!

Somehow I missed these videos in your previous posts. Thanks for pointing me there. They are great too.
I see the improvement over these 3. Your continuous commentary in the last one is the best, IMHO. If we want to watch the film we can do it elsewhere, but here the footage is for study, so you don’t need to let us enjoy the viewing quietly.

Actually the ultimate form would be to add (animated) handwriting over the footage (composition lines, camerawork, blocking details, elements to notice) but maybe it would look too scholarly, too technical. Thought it would help the general audience to learn how to read a film with more attention, which is quasi impossible to achieve in written critcism.
Some arrows and circles say more than a verbal description, and it leaves more time for you to comment. Just my 2 cents.

That’s a really interesting suggestion, HT. (offhand, it reminds me of what sports commentators do in analyzing plays). Certainly worth a try.

So far my girlfriend liked the one for Peter Ibbetson the most. She thought it was more reflective and personally inflected, whereas this one seemed more academic and crammed with information.

I’ll continue to try different approaches until I inevitably settle into an approach that works best for me. Suggestions and new ideas are always appreciated.
