The Son of the Sheik (1926, George Fitzmaurice)

mixed
Anzukko (1958, Mikio Naruse)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051367/

Diary for Timothy (1945, Humphrey Jennings)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0139153/
TSPDT #849
The sheer visual beauty of the images manage to be realistic yet consciously composed and lovingly textured; the seamless narrative that threads together the trajectories of the different "characters" (baby, recovering airman, miner) along the relentless continuum of life and progress, and just that feeling of life and history moving inexorably forward has a stirring energy to it (moreso than the first half of I WAS A FIREMAN which near put me to sleep -- I must have rated it highly before because of the blistering second half). In both films Jennings is a genius at blending together newsreel footage and staged documentary into a credible whole.
YES (#3 for 1945 between ROME, OPEN CITY and SCARLET STREET)
Fires Were Started / I Was a Fireman (1943, Humphrey Jennings) second viewing
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0035881/
downgraded from YES to yes (#9 for 1943 between THE LEOPARD MAN and OSSESSIONE)
Twilight of a Woman's Soul (1913, Yevgeni Bauer)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0368309/
yes (#4 for 1913 between A HOUSE DIVIDED and THE EVIDENCE OF THE FILM)
After Death (1915, Yevgeni Bauer)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0005916/
YES (#2 for 1915 between LES VAMPIRES and ALIAS JIMMY VALENTINE)
The Dying Swan (1917, Yevgeni Bauer)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0186650/
yes (#4 for 1917 between THE IMMIGRANT and STRAIGHT SHOOTING)
I can't recommend highly enough the Yevgeni Bauer DVD I saw, which has a very observant video essay by Yuri Tsivian. I don't think I would have appreciated these films nearly enough if I hadn't benefitted from his insights on staging, camerawork and Bauer's visualizations of his own thematic preoccupations.
Chronicle of a Disappearance (1996, Elia Suleiman)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115895/
Rosenbaum #574
YES (#4 for 1996 between GOODBYE SOUTH GOODBYE and FARGO)
Hapax Legomena I: Nostalgia (1971, Hollis Frampton)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0130908/
Rosenbaum #575
yes (#8 for 1971 between TWO LANE BLACKTOP and THE ACT OF SEEING WITH ONE'S OWN EYES)
Zorn's Lemma (1970, Hollis Frampton)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0131149/
TSPDT #850
