An image from childhood: more than the exciting poolhall sequences, this is the one image from THE HUSTLER that has stayed with me the most. Two wounded souls hobbling together out of a desolate diner. The melancholy warmth that's bundled in their embrace. Mutual aid in this desert of loneliness.

The Old Dark House (1932, James Whale)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0023293
yes

Le Camion / The Truck (1977, Marguerite Duras)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075799
YES (#6 for 1977 between ANNIE HALL and ERASERHEAD)
YES for John Waters' entertaining intro, which set the movie up perfectly.
YES to Film Comment writers Kent Jones and Amy Taubin for the post-screening argument over the merits of BATTLE IN HEAVEN (though I still don't get Taubin's comparison of Bresson and Hawks) -- and for the first divlugence of rumors that CRASH might upset BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN.

One Hour with You (1932, George Cukor, Ernst Lubitsch)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0023303
yes

Crash (2004, Paul Haggis)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0375679
NO NO NO (this is one of the worst films I've ever seen - a racist movie pretending to fight racism. But what's even worse is the sexism. It's so bad I didn't know whether to laugh or puke)
